The Knob

As I mentioned in my last post, we were camping this past week. We went up to Granddaddy's
knob. It's a 400 acre farm about a half an hour away from us. We stayed for three nights. We had planned to stay longer but rain drove us out.

The place we camped is about 3/4 a mile to a mile up the mountain. There is an old cabin near the top. It was built right after the civil war. I think I have this right. John Wilfong, my great-great-great-great grandfather built it.

We stored our food, chairs, plates, skillets and other such related items inside it.We had to do some serious cleaning before we could really feel comfortable staying in there, though. The place is over run with mice. That is one reason we didn't sleep in the cabin, also, Mama saw a black snake go under the floor and none of us wanted to share a house with him. We put our tents out side and Daddy weedeated( or is it weedate?) a place for our fire pit and around the tents.

After setting up we spent some time cleaning out culverts and ditches and pruning trees in the road.

Of course after doing road work the first thing you want to do is swim. Or you think you do. I'd say some of you know that the only place near enough to swim in is Spring Creek. To those of you don't know about Spring Creek, it's claim to fame is that it feels like 0 degrees in August. Can you imagine it in May?















We got in anyway. It was a long, cold walk back to the tents.

Sunday morning we had our own church at the top of the mountain. The tree below is at the very top. This Queen of the Mountain is a hawthorn.















Then we hiked until lunch. We found several Flame azaleas on our hike. They were really pretty. We saw a silly doe in the woods. She didn't look scared of us at all but Honey got her moving.

That afternoon we swam and sat around.

We hiked Monday and than it started to rain. It didn't quit so we packed up and left yesterday. Mine and Katie's tent was already soaked. It is awful to sleep in a wet bed.

Blueberries

The last few nights we have had pretty cold temperatures. we didn't think it was going to effect the bluberries that much but Daddy thinks now that it may have gotten half the crop. Please pray he's wrong. And pray that nothing else gets them.

A while back I mentioned a friend from church, Stephanie Workman, who had menengitis. She has a surgery tomorrow. Please pray that everything goes well and the doctors can find out what is causing it.

Mama leaves again this evening. She'll be back tomorrow.

Saturday we are going on a camping trip so don't expect anything on here until about next Thursday. Until next week then, Adios!-Hannah

Of Peeling Potatoes and Soccer

We've had a busy last few days. Saturday we had our soccer tournements. Ben and Nathan had a game at 8:15. We had to leave the house at 7:30 to get there. And on a Saturday too. They won that game 4-2. Then at 10:30 Katie and I played. We won 4-0. A very fun game. At 11: 45 the boys played again. They won 5-2. We played the last game at 3:00. We lost 2-0, but it was an all boys team, so that's our excuse. The only problem with that excuse is that we beat them a couple weeks ago. Katie is number 96 and with the long hair. Ben played for us that game and is 53. I didn't play 'cause my foot was hurt so don't look for me.

Sunday morning our youth group hosted a pancake breakfast for the church. We are sponsoring a boy in Zimbabwe and we did the breakfast as a fund raiser. It was a lot of fun. I don't think you know people very well until you're up with them at 7:00 in the morning peeling potatoes. The boys in particular were hilarious to watch.

Sunday evening Mama left for Virginia. She is taking a class on teaching for a program she is thinking of starting. She will be back tonight and leaves for a differnt class tomorrow.

This is our last week of soccer. We have a game tonight.

Daddy brought the sheep home yesterday. they were at another farm. I love watching the lambs.Adios!-Hannah

Quick note

I really don't feel like blogging right now, but I thought you might like to know we played at a soccer tournament. Over 80 degrees. We won one game & lost the other. The boys' first game was at 8:15 a.m. The last game was at 4:00. Big day. In the last game I fell & hurt my wrist & elbow. We're one big, sunburned, tired, hot, soccer-crazy family.

School's out

Well, school should be out. I have 2 Final tests to take & Hannah says she won't go to bed tonight until she's done. I'll believe it when I see it, Hannah loves a good, soft bed. The boys' finishing today is more than doubtful & less than likely. We'll see, right now their incintive is a huge camping trip we're planning. Another soccer game tonight. We won our last game(Fri.)

Other matters

Ben got his cast off last week. He is a very happy boy. However, he got a horrible sunburn where the cast had been, last Sunday at our game.

I guess Katie gave you the full download on soccer. We play tonight and hope to win.

Daddy dried the cow off and she should have a calf next month. About the same time we're at camp.

Two of our other cows had calves in the past weeks. I didn't say anything because I hoped to get pictures of them, but cows hide their calves after they're born and I haven't seen them yet. We are supposed to have three calves born this year so we are naming them after the Three Stooges. So far Larry and Moe have made an appearance. As mentioned before, Curly is coming.

The blueberries are starting to set. We still have some bloom, but small green berries are taking their place. And soon they'll start to swell and turn pink. And then red, and purple, and finally blue. Summer can't get here fast enough.-Hannah

What my Life Revolves Around

Can any body guess what I say that is?(the title) SOCCER, SOCCER, SOCCER, & MORE SOCCER!!!!! Oh, yeah, did I mention soccer?
No, I'm not kidding. Fri. we played a game & tied.(it was cut short because of a thunder storm.) Then on Sat. we were supposed to play 2 games, but they were cancelled 'cause of flooding. Then Sun. , Mother's Day , we drove an hour to play a traveling all boys team who had not been beat or even scored on this season , & would you believe it? We won!
During the game, while running up on a Kick Off, I got slammed in the face by the ball, it shoved my glasses into my face, so I have a beautiful black eye, not particularly noticable, just sore. We won 2-1, both our shots were Penalty Kicks. After the game Hannah &I made Mamma supper.
Monday we had another game, lost 4-0. We have another game tonight.
